Beck Scholarship
The Beck Scholarship honors Maurice P. Beck, a lifelong supporter of human services, who was well-known for his leadership of the Michigan League for Public Policy. He dedicated years of service to nonprofits and Michigan’s disadvantaged populations. He also helped to establish the 501 Alliance.
The scholarship is awarded to one Master’s of Social Work student each year and requires a written application. The League is the fiduciary for this fund.
Klein Scholarship
The Harry and Shirley Klein Legal Scholarship was established by 501 Alliance and the Human Services for Workers Compensation boards in honor of Mr. Klein. He was a nonprofit advocate and instrumental in forming the unemployment compensation group-reimbursing plan for nonprofit organizations.
Purpose
Mr. Klein spent his legal career in public service, particularly in support of nonprofits and not-for-profits. The $2,500 scholarship was established to assist those who demonstrate a desire and ability to follow in the philosophy and humanity rendered by him to social services agencies, nonprofits and not-for-profits, the disadvantaged and underprivileged.
Accomplishments
Mr. Klein was a Legal Aid Society trial attorney. He was instrumental in establishing legislation protecting the rights of children and battered women. He was integral in forming and organizing many nonprofits and not-for-profits. He served as agency counsel for United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit and many of its member agencies and organizations.
Qualifications
The scholarship is open to anyone presently enrolled in a law school located in Michigan. Candidates submit essays describing why they should be the recipient of the award, based on and in relation to the history and philosophy of Mr. Klein. Applications are due by April 1, with winners announced in May at 501 Alliance’s annual meeting.
